INDIVIDUAL THERAPY

It's here in all the pieces of my shame
That now I find myself again.
I yearn to belong to something, to be contained
In an all-embracing mind that sees me...
-Rainer Maria Rilke

We all want to feel more fully alive, connected and whole. People may seek individual therapy when the pain of feeling disconnected from the source of their well-being is too great to bear, or when feelings of depression, anxiety, anger or shame limit one’s sense of what is possible in life. Though perhaps unwanted, these feelings can also signal an opportunity for growth and, if befriended, sweep us back into a vibrant and life-changing encounter with our self.

Individual therapy can provide that containing and embracing mind about which Rilke wrote, first in the person of the therapist, but then, more enduringly, as the therapy progresses, in the heart of the client. As clients come to engage the experiences of their past and current lives more fully, they can begin to feel a greater range and play of thoughts, feelings and sensations. Overtime, the shadow of the past recedes, and individuals can then begin to experience a greater capacity for joy, freedom and aliveness.

Though I work with a range of clinical issues, I strive to help clients attune to the subtleties of experiences and emotions that lend life its flavor, meanings and depth. Unresponsive relationships or past trauma may render such nuanced attunement uncomfortable or, even, unsafe. In a very real way, individual therapy can help to reprogram a lifetime of dashed hopefulness and to set the stage for individuals to begin to access their deepest longings and to live their life’s possibilities.
